This site is promoting my mother's book "WHERE'S OUR LIZZIE, Haughton Green memories of a collier's lass" by Lizzie Barton (Elizabeth Clinton) Lizzie Barton lived in Haughton Green between 1909 and 1923. She wrote an account of her childhood in what was then a rural village. It is a fascinating social history.
The Bartons were “Greeners”.
-her grandmother was buried in St Mary’s Churchyard in 1895
-her Great grandfather in 1879.
-her father attended the old Iron School.
-her great great uncle taught school to local children in a small cottage before any school was built.
She started work at the Gibraltar Cotton Mill at the tender age of 14.
